DESIGN DIALOGUE

MEET THE DESIGN TEAM

We are proud to have been recently awarded a GOOD DESIGN AWARD - GOLD Product Design Furniture and Lighting. We sat down with our design team to ask some questions about the award winning new series 12, surfaced and simplified ZETR.

Why is it called 12?

The naming convention of our products has been with us from the start.
12 has a cutout length of 120mm, making the shorthand 12.

WAS SURFACE MOUNTED ELECTRICAL ALWAYS IN THE PLAN?

The plan is to constantly challenge ourselves to create and push the boundaries. It was a challenge to repurpose our minimal, flush design for a surface mounted option and something we’re pretty proud of.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE 12 GOOD DESIGN AWARD?

We are very excited and honoured to win a Good Design Award for ZETR 12 which has just been launched this September. This product series is a result of many years in design and development with the aim to create the thinnest and cleanest design possible within the product space. With the launch of ZETR 12 we hope to see our brand and offering be more accessible to a wider range of projects and markets and this accolade will be a huge force in helping to achieve this goal.

What was THE trickiest part of the design process?

Prototyping stage is the most complex. A final design will never look like the first iteration of something. There are so many competing factors such as aesthetics, functionality and what’s possible with manufacturing. We are also working with such small space, trying to simplify every aspect of not only the design of a product but the way it is installed and used. For this reason the design process is long.

AND THE MOST REWARDING?

The day we got our certification - that always feels like the day to have a party! So much work goes in before that moment and it’s a relief to see it pass with flying colours.

is 12 smaller than industry standard?

We find that things that seem the most simple are often the most complex to design. We tried to strip away a lot of a standard power outlet to make 12 have very little impact on the finished surface, which was difficult but very worth it. As a result 12 is about 30% smaller overall, and has the slimmest faceplate we’ve seen in Australia.

Where’s the ON/OFF switch on the outlets?

All of our ZETR power has internal switching mechanisms and in-built safety shutters. We always seek to simplify our products so keeping the faceplate as minimal as possible was one of the first distinctions. We continued this with 12, making it a super subtle faceplate.
